Materiality of Manuscripts

Call for Papers for sponsored sessions on “Materiality of Manuscripts” at the International Medieval Congress 2019, 1-4 July 2019, University of Leeds, UK.

Sponsor: Arnamagnæan Institute, University of Copenhagen, Denmark.
Organisers: Katarzyna Anna Kapitan (kak@hum.ku.dk) and N. Kıvılcım Yavuz (nky@hum.ku.dk).

In line with the special thematic strand of the International Medieval Congress 2019, Materialities, we are seeking papers for a series of sessions entitled “Materiality of Manuscripts.”

In the past few decades there has been an increasing interest in the materiality of manuscripts. The interest in the manuscript as artefact grew from different theoretical approaches to medieval texts, such as transmission history, intertextuality, and new/material/artefactual philology. We are interested in discussing how the physicality of manuscripts affects the experience of readers and scholars as well as understanding the structure and mechanisms of the production, dissemination and reception of texts as material objects shaped and reshaped through human agency. In this respect, the proposed session aims to bring together scholars working in diverse fields of medieval studies who study manuscripts in their historical contexts and texts in their manuscript contexts.

Please send 250-word proposals to the organizers by 15 September 2018.
